Badger Springs and Palm Middle Schools in Moreno Valley Unified School District are part of a group of 16 high-performing California middle schools recognized in the 2018-19 Schools to Watch - Taking Center Stage program, announced this week by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. The designation recognizes schools for their academic excellence, social equity, and responsiveness to their students.

With the re-designation of Vista Heights Middle School, all six middle schools in the Moreno Valley Unified School District now carry the designation (Mountain View, 2018; Landmark, 2017; Sunnymead, 2016). MVUSD is one of only 10 districts in California to have all its middle schools designated.

“These schools study and support students’ needs, which helps close achievement gaps and creates a better future for these young students,” Thurmond said in a news release.

As a responsibility of being selected, the schools are expected to guide and mentor staff at other middle schools, present professional development on their programs at state and national conferences and provide yearly updates on their academic performance and improvement.

“We understand that middle school an important time for adolescents,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, “I could not be more proud that for the first time, all of our middle schools are demonstrating that we are providing the support for these students to achieve at high levels.”

“All of us on the Board of Education congratulate Badger Springs and Palm Middle Schools for their work to ensure positive academic and social growth for their students,” Board of Education president Jesus Holguin said, “We are one of the few districts in the state to have all middle schools as members of this impactful designation.”

The Schools to Watch program is sponsored by the California Department of Education, California League of Middle Schools and the California Middle Grades Alliance. Badger Springs and Palm Middle Schools will be recognized at the California Middle Grades Alliance annual luncheon on March 15 in Sacramento.
